I highly recommend Evan Farr. His team is courteous and professional, and Evan is top tier as a practitioner in Wills, Trusts, Estates and Elder Law. I've had several real estate clients who have benefited greatly from the sound legal advice received by Evan and his team, as well as the compassion shown by them, in the difficult transition of selling the family home with parents aging. Evan Farr is an astute lawyer when it comes to understanding his clients needs and protecting the family nest egg.

We have a more than 12 year association with this skilled and well-known law firm. They have created detailed trust documents for us and has help is through updates and revisions as circumstances change. We always felt fully comfortable with updates as Evan explained in detail the changes he recommend and explained the reason for the change such as new financial position or up to the minute changes to applicable state and federal laws.
We recommended several relatives and friends to Farr Law Firm and each have been thoroughly satisfied.

The Health Care system for the aged in the United States is a maze of details, legalisms, and contradictions put together by the congress as result of compromises with special interest groups in Washington. For individuals who are not trained in these complexities, it can be harrowing and even dangerous to their financial security. When I brought my parents to the Farr Law Firm ten years ago, they hired the Farr Law Firm to take care of us for the rest of their lives. Over the ensuing years, Evan Farr issued precise directions on keeping records, transfers, what to do and not to do within the system, and gave careful advice that provided peace of mind and saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars in the end. My parents were proud and independent people that were pillars in their community. But like so many others, they had outlived their money when they reached their nineties. Thanks to the preparation beforehand, however, they were able to survive with excellent care and dignity until the end of their lives. This was in great part because of the prudent advice of the Farr Law Firm. At the end of my mother’s life, one of the paralegal team members was particularly great, even coming to my mother’s wake, which I greatly appreciated. The Farr Law Firm really stuck with me and my family throughout and after.

My mother was enduring late stage Alzheimer’s dementia. She had reached the place where I could no longer care for her at home. Her income was limited to Social Security and a tiny pension. Certainly not enough to pay for a long-term care facility. Mr. Farr and his staff provided me with the exact information and strategies needed to have Mama approved for Medicaid. I could not have done it without their knowledge and expertise. Mama spent her last months in a wonderful local long-term care facility. I highly recommend Mr. Farr if you need any elder law or estate planning services. He and his team are professional, practical and personable. Go there. It’s worth every penny.

We have been using Evan Farr in Fairfax for 20 years. He is thorough and every attorney in his office is super competent and dedicated to making sure that your living will/trust reflects your individual needs. It is a comprehensive process...they make you think about more than who you want to manage your money and when your children can get access to it. You are asked to think about the circumstances regarding when your loved ones should consider a nursing home, if any. You must think about who you want to make health care decisions for you if you cannot make them yourself. You must state your DNR instructions. You must think about autopsies and organ donation to name a VERY FEW. They give advice about who to list as beneficiaries for all types of assets. There are so many considerations that you must ponder so that your loved ones are not left with the burden of making these decisions. IT IS HARD AND SHOULD BE. It is a collaborative process. It is not boilerplate. And more importantly, it is not a ONE and DONE decision. Through the years your wishes may change as will your tax situation and the people you chose as trustees and guardians. The Farr legal team has been with us through all of these times. They are able to make legal mumbo jumbo understandable and relatable and they welcome questions. At the end, you will feel satisfied that every situation and issue has been considered. I am so thankful that we found them.

Evan Farr literally wrote the book on elder case. When I visited with my >80-year old father (who already had a solid set of end-of-life documents from another reputable attorney), Mr. Farr told me he wouldn't redo those documents for his own father. A year or so later, he sold my father an expensive set of replacement documents (without my knowledge, and I have a POA). He wouldn't refund the money, so we went through a time- consuming and largely unnecessary process to update these documents. The new documents are more complex, and in my opinion, tend to create a need for additional legal services down the road. For these reasons, I won't recommend this law firm to my friends.

In January of 2017 my 95 year old mother fell and broker her hip which started a dizzying journey with Medicare, Medicaid and proper legal planning. I researched a number of eldercare law firms and decided to have a meeting with Evan Farr (no relation)... he and his firm exceed our expectations and managed a complex financial and healthcare journey and accomplished everything. His staff have all been meticulous and professional. Our situation took place in Maryland which has its own quirks. I highly recommend them and would be happy to speak to people who may be considering them. Carlton Farr...again, no relation.

The most amazing lawyer ever! But before I go into the details of why I sing his praises, let me say that anyone who is here to read his reviews should immediately sign up for his newsletter. If you think you might need his services, you will benefit from his newsletter, which is chock-full of extremely useful information and original content. Unlike so many newsletters that just re-hash the same old stuff that is already out there and are full of generalities that aren't very helpful, Evan's newsletter includes the latest developments that affect his clients and addresses specific issues.
Here's my story: I hired Evan Farr in December 2016 to get my husband on Medicaid. Ours was an incredibly complex and unusual case that required a LOT of extra work for him and his team, and I am certain that his firm lost money handling our case because he charges a flat fee rather than billing hourly. The whole Medicaid process was full of twists and turns and many unexpected developments for me and for his team, and at each step of this tortuous 13-month journey, I sent up a prayer of thanks to God that Evan and his team were my guides and advocates. There is absolutely no way on earth that I could have successfully navigated Medicaid's byzantine requirements without them. Throughout the process, Evan and his team were amazingly responsive (e-mails were almost always answered within 24 hours; their responses to my relentless barrage of questions came early in the morning, late at night and on the weekends); unfailingly kind, helpful, encouraging and understanding; and never let on that my unexpectedly complex and long-and-drawn out case was a burden to them (as I'm sure it must have been). Because of them and their wise counsel, I was able to remain confident that we would ultimately get my husband approved for Medicaid, even though we encountered so many problems along the way and even though the process took far longer than anyone anticipated. Not only was I impressed again and again with how they went "above and beyond", it quickly became clear that Evan and his team truly *care* about their clients and are motivated by a deep-seated passion to improve the lives of their clients. He and his team are generous in every way: generous with their time and knowledge, and generous in spirit. For anyone who is in need of any of the services that the Evan Farr Law Firm provides, I can say with no equivocation whatsoever that the only mistake you could make is to *not* hire him. He truly is the most amazing lawyer ever!

I went to the Farr law firm about a year ago to try to get my Dad on Medicaid while retaining some of what became a meager life savings after paying for assisted living for 6 years.
Honestly, I feel like the 12k (not to mention the hours and hours of work and the aggravation) I spent on these services was for nothing.
I was told that the office knew the best nursing homes and would help getting my dad into a good nursing home by visiting them with me.That didn't happen. The only place the office suggested was disgusting and the staff there told me themselves that they would not be giving him his medication on time.
When I found where I wanted him I was told by the office that they didn't think that they accepted Medicaid and that it would be very difficult to get him in- both wrong- I did it myself.
I was told by Mr.Farr that we could retain about 60-90% of my dads money. We saved about 10%.
Trying to get Mr.Farr involved was like trying to see the Wizard of Oz- hard to get an audience and when the curtain was pulled aside, not much behind the bluster.
Sadly, my Dad passed about 3 months ago and nothing was ever resolved and the nursing home bills are up in the air.
Very disappointed.

I want to take this opportunity to say what a wonderful experience it was having the Evan Farr Law Firm handle the execution of a new Revocable Trust for me. I first met with Evan Farr for an hour, where he listened to what I wanted to do, and then suggested how the new Revocable Trust should be drafted to accomplish what I wanted. I was immediately struck by how knowledgeable Evan was about Trusts and Estate Planning, and after I left that first meeting, I knew he was someone I could trust to get the numerous documents drafted, to include a new medical directive and revocable trust. Jeannie Farr, his administrative assistant, was very professional, helpful, and kind, as I made subsequent appointments, and enabled me to speak with Evan as I was making decisions about the drafting and wording of my documents. Eventually, I was introduced to Justin Cohee, who is Evan's primary attorney that handles and helps to draft the documents for estate planning, trusts, and elder law matters. Justin is just like Evan, in that he is very knowledgeable, smart, and experienced in actually drafting my Revocable Trust and other documents for me to sign. I would say that Justin was easy and pleasant to work with, and he was very, very patient, as I made changes to the documents before I signed them. Finally, let me say, that the Evan Farr Law firm provides 2 free years of a card and service called DocuBank. This is an amazing addition to the estate planning documents, which is included in the overall charge for their legal services. Oh, I lest I forget, the nicest thing in dealing with Evan Farr and his team, is that the cost is a flat rate, and he is not nickel and diming his clients for their services, and any changes to the documents within one year are done without additional charges. Kudos to the Evan, Jeannie and Justin-they made what would or could have been a stressful experience, extremely pleasant. I would highly recommend them to my friends and family

I'm a lawyer in Salem VA, the southwestern part of the state. Like Mr. Haley I met Evan through the Virginia chapter, National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (VAELA) and was immediately impressed with his comprehensive command of even the arcane aspects of Elder Law. Simply, he is one of the five best elder lawyers in Virginia. Evan was one of the lawyers who helped get VAELA started, served on the board of directors and a term as president.
Evan believes in education about the various aspects of Elder Law. His blog is an easy-to-read education for non-lawyers about the intricacies of planning for seniors and gives alerts about changes that affect all of us. Also he is great at peer assistance - if one of us has a question Evan is willing to share his experience and consult with us for particularly difficult cases.
I have learned from Evan and am pleased to have this opportunity to review his firm.

Simply put, Evan is one of the leaders of the elder law bar here in Virginia as well as nationally! He is a Certified Elder Law Attorney and a member of the Council of Advanced Practitioners of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, which demonstrates his commitment to the law and his clients. Fellow attorneys hold Evan in high esteem as he frequently lectures on elder law and has even created technological advances to help elder law attorneys in their practices.
I wholeheartedly endorse Evan and the fine work he does for seniors and their families.

I wholeheartedly endorse Evan and the fine work he does for seniors and their families.
Evan's website has a ton of information and his staff is top notch. Give him a call if you are considering hiring an elder law attorney, or even just need some general advice.
Good luck!
