Child custody and divorce cases can be costly. Anyone going into one should know that upfront. That being said Joy Kraft has been extremely reasonable & willing to work with me. The initial law firm I used was much more expensive & yielded zero results in fact I believe even hurt my case from the start. Joy took over my case & since then then things have been moving in my direction & getting much better. My case is a child custody case & when it initially started (before Joy took over) I only had 6hrs of visitation per week with my child. I now 3 overnights & 2 weekdays every other week & my case is most certainly not over so more time is on it's way. I went from about 5% time with my child to about 30% with more time most certainly on the way. Joy pays attention to detail & she knows my case just as well as I do. In her office she is attentive & mild mannered however in the courtroom she is like a JUNKYARD DOG ! She is quit impressive in the courtroom & she knows family law just as well as she will know your case. I could not be happier with my choice of representation. Divorce is not an experience that your look forward to. It's also messy and very stressful because of the emotions and people involved. For me, hiring a lawyer was necessity not because I wanted to penalize my ex, but because I wanted an expert that would help me navigate the cumbersome process. To say that Joy Kraft-Miles is an expert is an understatement. She is a consummate professional with a solid reputation at the Chatsworth Courthouse. Initially, I tried to tackle the process myself, by going to the self-help center and filling out the documents on my own. This turned out to be overwhelming. She took my case even though I had a pending DV case. I spoke with four lawyers prior to Joy who would not take my case because of the DV. She whipped through my paper work in one meeting and told me my case could be brought to resolution with my help. I listened to her advice, asked millions of questions and continuously asked her and her legal secretary Marcos to clarify terms, rulings and paperwork when I did not understand what was going on. I trusted Joy from the first meeting. I think that is really important; to trust the person that you are working with. She was exceptional to work with under the circumstances. I went to Mrs. Miles in hopes of getting my dog back from my soon to be Ex-wife. I had a great meeting with her initially where she stated that she would get me my dog, spousal support, lawyer fees split, as well as most of my divorce finished and a DVRO taken care of. I'm from the south and when someone looks you in the eyes, says they will get you something and shakes your hand I generally believe that they will do the job they said they would. I paid Mrs. Miles 4,000 dollars, which was all the money I was able to borrow. I told Mrs. Miles that I was glad she would get me lawyer fees split and alimony because otherwise, I would soon be homeless if I wasn't able to recoup those fees and get support from my wife. After about a month and a half, I received another set of bills totaling close to another 5,600 more dollars on top of the 4,000 I had already paid her. Mrs. Miles knows that I make a yearly income before taxes of just about 20,000 dollars so I don't understand how she thought I would ever be able to pay her back. She told me that she would be willing to allow me to set up a payment plan paying her 250 a month for the next 23 months but she also knows that my wife and I racked up a lot of debt moving and paying for our wedding. She knows that I already spend about half my income paying back past debts and would never be able to add her 250 a month. She even told me that since I had so much debt that she suggest I file for bankruptcy but that I wouldn't be able to file bankruptcy on her lawyer fees. Needless to say, I was never informed that I had reached my retainer and she continued to bill me well over an amount that I could ever afford. I still don't have my dog, spousal support, lawyer fees split and the work she did on my divorce was so disorganized that I'm going to have to spend more time redoing it then I did helping her set it up in the first place. At this point, I'm unable to hire another lawyer because I gave Mrs. Miles all the money I could get so I will probably never see my dog again which was the only real reason I went to get a lawyer in the first place. Her excuse as to why I was being charged more is that she didn't initially think the case would be this hard to prosecute but the fact is I’m not a lawyer and she shouldn't have told me she could do something that she couldn't. If you want a transparent lawyer who makes sure you know what is going on then you might want to pass Mrs. Miles up and get yourself another attorney. I thought in the beginning that I would be better off getting a lawyer but in the end I wish so badly that I had gotten a few more opinions on my case rather then trusting Mrs. Miles and the Kraft, Miles, and Miller LLC.
